For nearly two decades, the Dallas Cowboys have cultivated a strong partnership with the City of Arlington, a collaboration marked by mutual growth and shared goals. Among the key figures behind this enduring relationship is Susan Skaggs, who has recently received a significant accolade for her contributions. Skaggs, the Cowboys’ director of civic affairs at AT&T Stadium, has been honored with the 2024 Arlington Visionary Award—a prestigious recognition established in 2017 to commend individuals who provide transformative leadership within Arlington’s tourism industry.

Skaggs has been a part of the Cowboys organization since 1990, playing a pivotal role in fostering and strengthening the bond with Arlington. This partnership reached a milestone in 2009 with the inauguration of AT&T Stadium, a landmark development for both the Cowboys and the city. Brent DeRaad, president and CEO of the Arlington Convention & Visitors Bureau, praised Skaggs for her forward-thinking contributions. “The Arlington Visionary Award highlights individuals who make a profound impact on our tourism sector,” said DeRaad. “Visionaries like Susan help us imagine and realize a brighter future for Arlington. Her insights and leadership have been invaluable as we shape the city’s prospects for the coming decades.”

Raul H. Gonzalez, Mayor Pro Tem of Arlington, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing Skaggs’ exceptional qualities and dedication. “When I think of Susan, words like elegance, grace, and determination come to mind,” Gonzalez shared. “Her efforts have been instrumental in driving progress within Arlington. She’s a true force for positive change.”

Skaggs’ commitment to Arlington’s development became particularly evident in August 2005, during the “Yes Arlington” stadium campaign. Leading outreach and advocacy efforts, she generated widespread enthusiasm and awareness about the project’s significance for the community. Representing the Dallas Cowboys, Skaggs organized charity events and voter engagement initiatives to support the campaign, ensuring high participation during the early election and on election day. Her contributions did not end there. She was also heavily involved in securing major events for the stadium, such as North Texas’ Super Bowl XLV and the NCAA Final Four, and has consistently supported bids for additional high-profile events at AT&T Stadium.

In 2006, the Arlington City Council recognized Skaggs’ expertise and dedication by appointing her to the Arlington Convention & Visitors Bureau’s Board of Directors, where she has served as Marketing Chair. Her leadership extended to the Arlington Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, further solidifying her role as a key advocate for the city’s growth and prosperity. Erika Boyd, president and CEO of the Texas Travel Alliance, lauded Skaggs for her impact on the broader travel and tourism industry. “Susan’s passion and engagement, both locally and at the state level, have elevated our industry in remarkable ways,” Boyd remarked. “We are deeply grateful for her contributions and the partnership she’s fostered through the Dallas Cowboys.”

Skaggs’ visionary leadership has undoubtedly left a lasting imprint on Arlington. Her efforts not only helped position the city as a premier destination for sports and entertainment but also strengthened its economic foundation through tourism. The 2024 Arlington Visionary Award serves as a testament to her enduring influence and dedication to building a vibrant, thriving community.
