Dylan Sampson injury update: Tennessee running back for the CFP first-round matchup vs Ohio State

In the College Football Playoff first-round game against Ohio State, Tennessee Volunteers’ running back Dylan Sampson was sidelined early due to a hamstring injury. Sampson, who had been instrumental in Tennessee’s offensive success throughout the season, managed only two carries for six yards before exiting the game.

The absence of Sampson significantly impacted the Volunteers’ offensive dynamics. Known for his explosive speed and playmaking abilities, his departure forced Tennessee to rely more heavily on quarterback Nico Iamaleava and other running backs to fill the void. Iamaleava led the team in rushing with 36 yards on 13 attempts, including a touchdown, while DeSean Bishop contributed four carries for 13 yards.

Head coach Josh Heupel provided limited information regarding Sampson’s condition during the game. When questioned at halftime, Heupel remarked, “Look, a lot of football left. We got 30 more minutes. Let’s go play,” offering no specific details about Sampson’s status.

ESPN’s Marty Smith reported that Sampson was experiencing tightness in his left hamstring and was seen attempting to loosen it on the sideline, including time spent on a stationary bike. Despite these efforts, he did not return to the game.

Sampson’s injury was a significant setback for Tennessee, as he had been a key contributor throughout the season, leading the team’s rushing attack and earning recognition as the SEC Offensive Player of the Year. His absence was felt in the Volunteers’ 42-17 loss to Ohio State, underscoring his importance to the team’s offensive strategy.

As of now, there have been no further updates on Sampson’s condition or his availability for future games. The team and fans alike will be eagerly awaiting news on his recovery and potential return to the field.
