The LSU Tigers, under the leadership of head coach Brian Kelly, have made significant waves in the college football transfer portal. With their latest acquisition, LSU now boasts the No. 3 transfer portal class in the nation, featuring a total of 11 commitments as of Friday afternoon.
This impressive haul includes seven transfers from SEC programs, two from the ACC, and a former Big Ten starter. Kelly and his team have been aggressive in reshaping the roster, particularly in preparation for the 2025 season. The Tigers have managed to bring in high-caliber talent, positioning themselves as a powerhouse both on and off the field.
Offense: Key Newcomers
TE Bauer Sharp (Oklahoma)
Former Oklahoma tight end Bauer Sharp was LSU’s latest addition, officially joining the Tigers on Friday. Sharp, who led the Sooners in receptions (42) and receiving yards (324) during the 2024 season, brings versatility to LSU’s offense. Known for his physicality in the run game, Sharp is expected to contribute significantly as both a blocker and a receiving threat.
“He’s a talented player who excels in physicality, particularly in the run game,” Kelly remarked. “Sharp’s ability to block, pull, and play on the perimeter makes him an asset. He also has the athleticism to make an impact in the passing game.”
WR Barion Brown (Kentucky)
Barion Brown joined the Tigers after three productive seasons at Kentucky. With over 120 career receptions, 1,500+ receiving yards, and double-digit touchdowns, Brown is a proven playmaker. Notably, he holds the SEC record for most kick return touchdowns (five) and adds a dynamic element to LSU’s special teams.
Kelly praised Brown’s explosiveness and veteran presence, stating, “He’s a mature player who complements our young receiving corps. Brown’s ability to stretch the field aligns perfectly with our veteran quarterback’s skill set.”
QB Michael Van Buren (Mississippi State)
After a year at Mississippi State, quarterback Michael Van Buren has transferred to LSU. The former Bulldog started as a true freshman in 2024, completing 140-of-256 passes for 1,886 yards and 11 touchdowns while adding five rushing scores. At LSU, he provides valuable SEC experience and depth behind starting quarterback Garrett Nussmeier.
“It’s critical to have competition at every position,” Kelly explained. “Van Buren’s SEC experience and proven talent make him a strong addition to our quarterback room.”
WR Destyn Hill (Florida State)
Destyn Hill, a Louisiana native, returns to his home state after two seasons with Florida State. The former Top-100 recruit had a promising 2023 season, averaging 14.5 yards per catch on six receptions. Despite missing 2024 due to injury, Hill brings potential and multiple years of eligibility to LSU.
WR Nic Anderson (Oklahoma)
Nic Anderson, a record-breaking freshman at Oklahoma, adds firepower to LSU’s receiving corps. In 2023, Anderson set the Sooners’ freshman record for touchdown receptions (10) and tallied 798 receiving yards. Although injuries sidelined him in 2024, his potential to make an immediate impact is undeniable.
Defense: New Faces
CB Ja’Keem Jackson (Florida)
Former Florida cornerback Ja’Keem Jackson bolsters LSU’s secondary after two years with the Gators. Despite being sidelined in 2024 due to an ankle injury, Jackson’s starting experience against SEC competition makes him a valuable addition.
Kelly emphasized the importance of Jackson’s experience, saying, “We value players who have proven themselves against high-level competition. Jackson brings that level of readiness to our defense.”
EDGE Jimari Butler (Nebraska)
Jimari Butler joins LSU after a standout career at Nebraska, where he recorded 65 tackles, 17 tackles for loss, and 7.5 sacks. In 2024, Butler tallied seven tackles for loss and two sacks, showcasing his ability to disrupt opposing offenses. Kelly highlighted Butler’s versatility and work ethic, noting his impact both on and off the field.
EDGE Jack Pyburn (Florida)
Jack Pyburn comes to LSU after a breakout 2024 season with Florida, where he recorded 60 tackles, four tackles for loss, and one interception. As the No. 4-rated edge rusher in the portal, Pyburn projects as a Day 1 starter for the Tigers.
CB Mansoor Delane (Virginia Tech)
Virginia Tech’s Mansoor Delane brings a wealth of experience and versatility to LSU’s secondary. Over three seasons with the Hokies, Delane amassed 146 tackles, 16 pass breakups, six interceptions, and four forced fumbles. Rated as the No. 2 cornerback in the portal, he is expected to anchor the Tigers’ defensive backfield.
DL Sydir Mitchell (Texas)
Sydir Mitchell, a 6-foot-6, 350-pound defensive lineman from Texas, joins LSU with three years of eligibility remaining. Despite limited action during his time with the Longhorns, Mitchell’s size and potential make him a promising addition to the Tigers’ defensive front.
Special Teams: A Vital Upgrade
Punter Grant Chadwick
LSU addressed a key need on special teams by acquiring Grant Chadwick, one of the nation’s top punters. As a true freshman in 2024, Chadwick averaged 43.4 yards per punt, with a season-long kick of 60 yards. With three years of eligibility remaining, Chadwick is expected to stabilize LSU’s punting game.
A Bright Future for LSU
The Tigers’ efforts in the transfer portal reflect a commitment to excellence and a clear strategy for roster building. With a mix of experienced players and young talent, LSU has positioned itself as a contender for the upcoming seasons. Each addition brings unique strengths, addressing key areas of need across the roster.
As LSU prepares for the 2025 season, the influx of talent from the transfer portal underscores Brian Kelly’s vision for the program. With immediate impact players on both sides of the ball and special teams, the Tigers are poised for success on the national stage.
