Everton have been told it will cost them around £6million to sign Ben Johnson from West Ham in the January transfer window, according to Claret & Hugh.

Website founder Hughie Southon reported on Thursday (19 October) that Johnson looks set to leave London Stadium early in the new year, with Luton Town also showing an interest.

Johnson has spent his entire senior career to date at West Ham, but he has been restricted to just one appearance in all competitions this season.

Rivalling Luton Town for a £6m player hardly sounds like the start of a bright new era at Everton, but it may well be a move that makes sense.

Johnson has plenty of Premier League experience under his belt, having featured 51 times for the Hammers over the past three seasons.

Predominantly a left-back, the former England Under-21 international can provide competition in that area and is also capable of playing elsewhere in defence and midfield.

Still just 23 years old, Johnson is also at an age in which he can improve further if used more regularly than he currently is at West Ham.

And let’s be honest, at a fee of just £6m, this is hardly a deal that is going to break the bank – new owners or not.

It may well be that nothing else comes of this speculation, but it would not be the worst transfer on the face of it.
