Ryan Day and Chip Kelly Secure Five-Star Quarterback Brady Edmunds for 2027 Recruiting Class
Ohio State University (OSU) football coaches Ryan Day and Chip Kelly have successfully landed a major commitment for the 2027 recruitment cycle. On Monday, five-star quarterback prospect Brady Edmunds from California announced his decision to join the Buckeyes, adding a significant asset to the program’s future roster.
Standing tall at 6-foot-5 and weighing 200 pounds, Edmunds made his commitment shortly after attending Ohio Stadium for the Buckeyes’ showdown against Michigan on Saturday. His visit further solidified his decision, capping off months of developing a relationship with the OSU coaching staff.
A Standout Prospect Recognized Early
Edmunds first caught the attention of Day and Kelly during a recruiting camp in June, where his exceptional performance earned him an offer from Ohio State. After carefully considering his options, Edmunds chose OSU over other prestigious programs, including Penn State, Michigan, and Texas.
“My family has been lifelong Ohio State fans,” Edmunds shared in an interview with Eleven Warriors back in October. “My grandfather is from Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, and was a passionate Ohio State fan. He even attended the university for a brief period. That passion trickled down to my dad, and then to me and my siblings. When I got that offer, it was surreal. It felt like a dream come true.”
The offer was particularly emotional for Edmunds’ family. “My dad and grandfather were overwhelmed,” he said. “It was a moment we’ll never forget—one of pride and gratitude.”
An Unforgettable Gameday Experience
Edmunds’ second visit to Columbus, where he experienced the electric atmosphere of a gameday against Iowa, played a pivotal role in his commitment. During this visit, he gained a deeper understanding of the program’s culture and development philosophy. The one-on-one conversations with Day and Kelly left a lasting impression.
“I had extended talks with Coach Day and Coach Kelly during that visit—probably 45 minutes each, just my parents and me,” Edmunds said. “It wasn’t even about recruiting at that point. We talked about football, life, and our respective seasons. It was honest and straightforward, and I appreciated that.”
This clarity about OSU’s vision cemented Edmunds’ belief that Ohio State was the right place for him. “I already knew what Ohio State had to offer. It wasn’t about selling me anything; it was about seeing how I fit into their plans. Their offense, their coaching style, and the culture of the program—it all aligned with what I wanted.”
A Leader for the 2027 Class
Interestingly, Ohio State secured Edmunds’ commitment for the 2027 cycle before finalizing a quarterback for the 2026 class. This strategic move allows Edmunds to step into a leadership role for his class, much like Tavien St. Clair did for the 2025 recruitment cycle.
“I’m joining a national championship contender,” Edmunds stated confidently. “Their offense is a perfect fit for my style of play. They’ve got a balanced attack with explosive potential—whether it’s rushing or throwing for 350 yards. They also have the best receivers and running backs in the nation. Combine that with a family-like atmosphere, and it felt like home.”
His enthusiasm extends beyond football. “It’s about being surrounded by good people with shared values. That stood out to me.”
Impressive High School Career
Ranked No. 10 overall and the No. 2 quarterback in the 2027 recruiting cycle by 247Sports’ composite rankings, Edmunds has proven himself a standout talent. His sophomore season at Huntington Beach High School (Huntington Beach, California) showcased his impressive stats: 217 completions on 348 attempts for 3,222 yards, 36 touchdowns, and nine interceptions. He also rushed for 312 yards and added nine touchdowns on the ground. As a freshman, he threw for 2,691 yards and 24 touchdowns, demonstrating his ability to deliver under pressure from an early age.
“I’m not just a passer,” Edmunds explained. “People might assume I’m a traditional pocket passer because of my size—6-foot-5 or 6-foot-6 and over 200 pounds—but I’ve worked hard to become a threat on the ground as well. This season, I had games where I rushed for over 100 yards. I even broke a 60-yard run in one of them.”
Edmunds also emphasized his toughness on the field. “I’m a football player first. I’m not afraid to lower my shoulder and take a hit if it means helping my team. Sometimes my coaches have to remind me to slide, but it’s just part of how I approach the game.”
A High Ceiling for Development
Despite already being a standout, Edmunds acknowledges there’s room for growth. With his physical attributes, arm talent, and emerging mobility, he’s poised to become an impactful player at the collegiate level. His unique combination of size and agility provides the Buckeyes with an array of offensive options, potentially making him a starting candidate within his first year or two at Ohio State.
“It’s about putting in the work,” Edmunds said. “I know the expectations are high, and I’m ready to meet them. The coaching staff has laid out a clear developmental plan, and I’m excited to take that journey with them.”
Future Implications for OSU
By securing Edmunds, Ohio State now has breathing room to be deliberate in their search for a quarterback in the 2026 class. Day and Kelly can focus on finding a prospect who complements their system without feeling rushed.
Edmunds’ commitment also sends a strong message to future recruits. His decision reinforces Ohio State’s reputation as a top destination for quarterbacks and signals the program’s ability to attract elite talent from across the country.
Edmunds’ Vision for the Future
As Edmunds looks ahead to his collegiate career, his focus remains on contributing to a winning culture and becoming a leader both on and off the field. “It’s not just about football—it’s about building relationships and growing as a person. Ohio State offers me the chance to do both.”
For Ohio State fans, the arrival of Brady Edmunds represents more than just another recruit. It symbolizes the continuation of a tradition of excellence at the quarterback position and the promise of future successes under Ryan Day’s leadership. As Edmunds gears up for his junior season in high school, all eyes will be on the young star as he works to solidify his place as the No. 1 quarterback in the 2027 class.
