The Oklahoma Sooners have bolstered their defense by securing a commitment from former Oklahoma State linebacker Kendal Daniels. This acquisition addresses a critical need for depth and experience at the linebacker position, especially following recent departures from the Sooners’ roster.

Background and Recruitment

Kendal Daniels, a native of Beggs, Oklahoma, joined Oklahoma State in 2021 as a consensus four-star recruit. He was recognized as the top player in Oklahoma and the ninth-best linebacker nationally in his class. After redshirting his freshman year, Daniels quickly became a key contributor for the Cowboys.

Collegiate Performance

Over his three seasons at Oklahoma State, Daniels demonstrated versatility and playmaking ability:

  • 2022 Season: As a redshirt freshman, he played 652 snaps, starting five games. He recorded 71 tackles, seven tackles for loss, three interceptions, and a forced fumble. His performance earned him the Big 12 Defensive Freshman of the Year award and second-team All-Big 12 honors.
  • 2023 Season: Daniels played 931 snaps, starting all 14 games. He amassed 106 tackles, six tackles for loss, two sacks, two interceptions, and a forced fumble. His contributions were instrumental in the Cowboys’ 10-4 season and their appearance in the Big 12 Championship game.
  • 2024 Season: Despite the team’s challenges, Daniels led the Cowboys with 64 tackles, 11 tackles for loss, and 5.5 sacks.

Throughout his collegiate career, Daniels accumulated 240 tackles, 24 tackles for loss, 7.5 sacks, and five interceptions. His ability to impact the game in various facets underscores his value as a versatile defender.

Impact on the Sooners’ Defense

The Sooners’ linebacker corps faced significant changes with the graduation of Danny Stutsman and the transfers of Lewis Carter and Dasan McCullough. These departures left a noticeable gap in experience and depth. Daniels’ addition is expected to immediately enhance the linebacker rotation, providing leadership and stability.

Beyond his traditional linebacker role, Daniels’ experience in coverage—having logged 448 snaps at safety and 483 snaps at corner over the past two seasons—makes him a strong candidate for the Sooners’ cheetah position. His 6-foot-4 frame and length are advantageous for both in-the-box play and coverage responsibilities.

Recent Transfer Activity

The Sooners’ acquisition of Daniels follows a pattern of securing talent from in-state rivals. In December 2022, defensive end Trace Ford transferred from Oklahoma State to Oklahoma, citing a desire for a fresh start and professional development. Ford’s move was notable, given the historic rivalry between the two programs. citeturn0search4
