Wrexham AFC owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney’s birthday gifts have become something of a competition in recent years – from a urinal to a blimp overhead the club’s football ground to Reynold’s own song, there have been some beauties.

But this year’s effort from McElhenney might just be the best yet – with the It’s Always Sunny… star gifting his Hollywood owner counterpart his very own park. McElhenney has reportedly submitted proposals to “gift” Reynolds a new public park in the heart of Wrexham city centre for his 47th birthday, reports North Wales Live.

To be called ‘The Ryan Rodney Reynolds Memorial Park’ the big surprise was unveiled in an online video in which McElhenney enlisted fellow Hollywood megastar Chris Pratt. “This year my idea involves a… park,” he said in the online video, to which Chris exclaims loudly “Ohh!” followed by an eyeball roll before Rob continues: “This park will be beautiful.”

“It will have open green spaces. Pop-up restaurants. It will have movie screens,” Rob continued. “There will be actual green lanterns. Benches for old guys to swing on. A statue that clearly does not look like Ryan. Happy birthday Ryan!”

Afterr Rob dropped the video on Monday, many were left wondering what could feature in the park and how it will be used. The proposed site is the former Hippodrome cinema, which was much loved before being demolished in 1998.

Wrexham Council bought the site in late 2021 with the aim of using it to help create a focal point for shoppers and visitors. In 2022 it undertook some refurbishment of the park and used it for several community events and McElhenney has now outlined preliminary plans of his aims and ambitions for the park, which he hoped can create a flexible space for use by Wrexham’s community.

Wrexham Council said the site could also create a family-orientated space featuring play facilities, tables and chairs, artworks, street food and even some community cinema – a nod to the former Hippodrome site.
