In a recent matchup between the Toronto Raptors and the Golden State Warriors, Raptors head coach Darko Rajaković humorously expressed his anticipation for Stephen Curry’s retirement. Following the Raptors’ 104-101 victory, Rajaković remarked, “I’ve been coaching against him for a long, long time. I can’t wait for him to retire. I’m going to get drunk that night, I promise you that.”

This light-hearted comment underscores the profound impact Curry has had on opponents throughout his illustrious career. Renowned for his exceptional shooting ability and game-changing performances, Curry has been a formidable challenge for coaches and players alike. Rajaković acknowledged this, stating, “It’s a privilege for all of us to live in an era” where Curry plays the game of basketball.

In the game, Curry delivered a strong performance with 26 points, seven assists, and seven rebounds. However, the Raptors’ defense managed to limit his impact in the crucial final quarter, holding him to just five points on three shots. This defensive effort was pivotal in securing the win and snapping Toronto’s five-game losing streak.

Rajaković also praised his team’s defensive anchor, center Jakob Poeltl, highlighting his contributions: “I cannot praise enough how much small stuff Jak does for us. The Warriors scored 26 points in the paint, and a big part of that is Jakob’s defense.”

Curry’s influence on the game extends beyond his scoring. Recently, he surpassed Allen Iverson to become 28th on the all-time scoring list and moved ahead of Kobe Bryant to 35th in career assists.

Despite the Warriors’ recent struggles, with four losses in their last five games, Curry continues to perform at a high level, averaging 22.7 points, 6.1 assists, and 5.1 rebounds per game this season.

Rajaković’s jesting anticipation of Curry’s retirement reflects a sentiment likely shared by many coaches who have strategized against the two-time MVP. Curry’s unparalleled shooting range and ability to influence the game’s tempo have made him a perennial threat on the court.

As Curry himself has acknowledged, the end of his career is approaching. At 36, he has mentioned contemplating retirement more frequently, stating, “The end is near.”

Until that day comes, coaches like Rajaković will continue to devise strategies to contain Curry’s brilliance, all while appreciating the opportunity to compete against one of basketball’s all-time greats.
