The stunning ace, acquired for an estimated £870,000 during the summer transfer window, is expected to face Norwich City. Tony Mowbray says
Sunderland head coach Tony Mowbray has hinted in his pre-match press conference that teenager starlet Eliezer Mayenda could make his debut this weekend against Norwich City.
Mayenda moved to the Stadium of Light during the summer transfer window for a reported £870,000 but his former club Sochaux kept a 25 percent sell-on clause for any future sale of the attacker.
However, shortly after joining the Black Cats, the 18-year-old pulled his hamstring, keeping him out of the squad for several months but he has since returned to training and Mowbray confirmed that the youngster even played a full 90 minutes at the start of the week.
When asked about whether Mayenda will be in the squad for tomorrow’s clash against the Canaries, the Sunderland boss remained tight-lipped but open to the possibility [quotes via Sunderland AFC News.
“I think we’ll probably put another striker on the bench, and see if it helps us. Ultimately, he is not ready [to start] because he hasn’t really played football for ten weeks.
“He’s played one 90 minutes at the start of the week, so he isn’t going to be ready [to start] after ten weeks not doing what he’d normally be doing. Is it worth putting him on the bench, and maybe giving him a spell at the end of the game?
“Maybe, because it only takes a second to score a goal. So let’s wait and see.”
Sunderland have struggled for goals in recent matches, having bagged just once in their last three fixtures. Furthermore, Jack Clarke has scored eight times this season. Six players are tied for the Black Cats’ second-highest scorer with merely two goals.
