Tony Mowbray has praised his Sunderland side’s ‘character’ for the way they recovered after conceding first against Norwich City to lead before half-time on their way to a convincing win on Wearside. The Canaries scored midway through the first half with their first real attack, with Ui-Jo Hwang putting them in front against the run of play, before a deflected Trai Hume shot and a goal from Dan Neil turned things around.
And then ten minutes from full-time, Jack Clarke earned and converted a penalty to wrap up the points and end the Black Cats’ three-game losing streak. “I think it was the right result for the way the game went,” said Mowbray.
“We felt ‘here we go again’ because I don’t think they had been over the halfway line and yet we lost a goal, but we showed great character to get in front before half-time. We produced some really good play, some really positive play, some front foot play, and it was really important for us [to win] because as I have said in the week, I think it was a bit harsh on us to have lost three in a row.
“Within that run, there were some pretty OK performances in all of those games at times, but you have to take it on the chin when you lose. It was important to keep the confidence and belief of the team going.
“We’re happy with the points and we have a week now – rather than two days – to prepare for the next one [at Swansea City next Saturday], so I’m looking forward to that.”
