The Lions looked set for all three points against Watford but a stoppage-time goal denied them.

Millwall did extend their unbeaten away run to five games.

“I’m definitely disappointed after we got ourselves in a great position,” said caretaker manager Barrett.

“We had a great chance to go 3-1 up and I was just expecting the ball to hit the back of the net. Then, at the end, it’s a real sickener to take because we worked so hard put ourselves in such a good position.

“I expect us to deal with that at the end there – it’s a bread and butter sort of chance for us. I was very disappointed to see that go in the back of the net.”

Millwall started slowly, just as they did at Preston, and found themselves behind after just five minutes after a mix up between Jake Cooper and Bart Bialkokwsi allowed the home side to take the lead.

Barrett said: “The two goals we conceded were poor. I’d expect us to deal with both. The first one was obviously a mix-up, a mistake which puts you on the backfoot straight away, but I felt we responded really well.

“We got a little bit ragged at the end of the first half where they opened us up a bit. We started jumping out of our shape and they were starting to cause us some problems – but then we regrouped again second half and we were in control for a lot of it. I didn’t feel concerned. We got the goal from the set-play and then the kick in the teeth right at the end there.”

Millwall’s second goal came from a corner, the first time this season they have scored from that situation, after being prolific in recent years – topping the charts of goals from set-pieces last season.

“It’s been a real asset for us over the last few years,” said Barrett. “But now teams make it very hard for you and you have to find a way of doing it.

“I do expect us to be scoring more goals from set-plays with the players that we’ve got. That’s something we’ve worked on and spoken about, so it was nice to see that go in. But I do expect more from us and expect us to be even more threatening than we have been so far.”

Millwall have a free week to prepare for the visit of Southampton next Saturday.

“It’s been a hectic week, there’s been a lot of upheaval at the club, we’ve had three tough games and the boys have stuck together, ” Barrett said.

“I’m pleased to get a point, as this is a dangerous place to come, but on the back of the situation we were in, I’m disappointed not to come away with three.”

“We have a real tough game next week, Southampton at home. We’re down to the bare bones squad wise, so it will be nice to get some of the senior lads back into training and closer to it. It’s nice to have a free week and we can get some work done on the training pitch this week.”
