Leeds handed Championship ‘boost’

With Leeds United fans still celebrating their 1-0 win over Championship leaders Leicester City on Friday night, their promotions hopes were handed another boost today when Wayne Rooney’s Birmingham City drew with second-placed Ipswich Town – although it could have been even better.Wayne Rooney, manager of Birmingham City

Rooney has had a tough start to life at St Andrews, but saw his side take the lead through Jay Stansfield before an own goal from Cameron Burgess doubled their lead. Marcus Harness pulled one back for Kieran McKenna’s side before the same levelled the scores with minutes to go.

Elswhere, Southampton had a late Ryan Fraser goal to thank for a 1-0 win over Millwall, while West Bromwich Albion beat Hull City and Preston defeated Coventry.

It means Leeds are still seven points behind the Tractor Boys, who have a game in hand, but the momentum is very much with Daniel Farke’s side. Leeds have now beaten both Leicester and Ipswich away from home, with Plymouth Argyle up next at Elland Road.

Meslier stays focused

Illan Meslier has stressed the “importance of staying focused” until the death as his last-minute save clinched a huge win for Leeds United. Few expected the Whites to win at the King Power Stadium against Championship leaders Leicester

Meslier stopped Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall’s bullet header in added time with a wonder save to ensure a 1-0 win for Daniel Farke’s men.

Speaking post-match, the Frenchman admitted having little to do until stoppage time was testing but he “prepared” to stay alert until the dying embers. He told LUTV: “It was difficult for me because I didn’t make one save all game. But I prepared myself to make one, I just didn’t know when it would arrive!

“It came in the 95th, or 96th maybe… I’m more than happy because we kept the win and the clean sheet. When we say it’s important to stay focused until the end, that’s why.”
