Sunderland winger Jack Clarke is attracting interest from Premier League side Brentford ahead of the January transfer window. 

According to Alan Nixon, Brentford are ‘on red alert’ and are monitoring his situation after an ‘impasse’ between the club and player over talks of a new contract.

The Black Cats have moved to offer Clarke a new deal with a pay rise, but it is said that it is not big enough to tempt the 22-year-old to stay, as he knows he can get a lot more in the Premier League.

Sunderland are said to want £20 million upfront for the winger, with a deal said to take a lot of ‘gagging’ to get it done.

Brentford would only bid for around £15 million, with fellow Premier League side Burnley having bids rejected for him in the summer.

Losing Clarke would be a blow

Losing Clarke would be a big blow for Manager Tony Mowbray, who he has described before as a ‘diamond’.

Clarke has been his side’s main source of goal this season, scoring nine goals in 15 games so far this season, already equalling his goal tally for the entirety of last season.

He is also the top scorer in the Championship this season, adding goals to his game, which has been important for Sunderland with the strikers failing to score this season.

Mowbray has recently branded this as a reason for them failing to pick up points, with the 0-0 draw at Swansea Mowbray pinning the reason they failed to score down to the strikers being ‘inexperienced
