A potential Philadelphia Phillies pitching target has turned down his one-year qualifying offer from the San Diego Padres.
Blake Snell, a pitcher that USA Today reported might be the Phillies’ top target if they’re unable to retain Aaron Nola, turned down a guaranteed $20.325 million in 2024 to pursue a long-term extension.
Snell was finishing out a five-year, $50 million deal that he originally signed with the Tampa Bay Rays back in 2019.
Nola, oddly enough, turned down his own qualifying offer from the Phillies after wrapping up a five-year, $100 million extension he signed with the Phillies five years ago.
It wasn’t a surprise that Nola and Snell turned down the offer to pursue a long-term deal. Only seven players received the qualifying offer this offseason, and only 13 of the 124 players that have received it since 2012 have accepted it
