The San Francisco 49ers comfortably defeated the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday, but it wasn’t all good news, as the team lost All-Pro safety Talanoa Hufanga to a torn ACL that will cost him the remainder of the 2023 season, according to head coach Kyle Shanahan.

As a result, the 49ers relied on third-round rookie Ji’Ayir Brown, who overcame a coverage mishap to make a number of key plays down the stretch.

The injury to Hufanga has significant implications for the 49ers, who now will get an accurate read on how well Brown has progressed behind the scenes as they navigate without one of their top defensive players.

It also is a major twist for Hufanga, who is extension-eligible for the first time this offseason, but will likely have to prove himself in 2024 ahead of earning a major deal.

In our latest podcast episode, we discussed the 49ers win over the Buccaneers, while breking down the implications of Hufanga’s injury, and looked ahead to the Week 12 matchup against the Seattle Seahawks.
