Geno Smith of the Seahawks is slated to play against the 49ers. Dr., please confirm this after……
Geno Smith’s hopes of playing in the Seattle Seahawks’ massive Thanksgiving clash with the San Francisco 49ers looked slim when he left their defeat to the Los Angeles Rams with an injury to his arm.
Despite the short week, Smith looks set to play through a significant bruise to his tricep area in the primetime contest, which will likely go a long way to determining whether the Seahawks can wrest the NFC West title from the 49ers.
Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, head coach Pete Carroll confirmed Smith is trending towards playing against San Francisco.
“I’m kind of thinking he is. Yeah,” Carroll responded when asked if Smith will play.
“His attitude about what this was; it was not going to be bother him. It wasn’t going to be a big factor. It looks bad because he’s got a big bruise on the back of his triceps, but his attitude has been right on it the whole time. He hasn’t missed a snap as far as we didn’t let him throw the first couple of days, but he didn’t miss a snap. He was doing everything. He’s ready to go.”
Smith playing while banged up against a San Francisco defense that racked up 38 pressures last week in the 49ers’ win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers is undoubtedly a risk, but it’s a calculated one worth taken given the stakes.
Should the Seahawks lose, as most expect them to, they will be two games back of the 49ers in the division with another game on the road against San Francisco either side of meetings with the Dallas Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles to come.
It would leave them with an uphill battle to dethrone the 49ers and, while Smith has not reached the heights of his 2022 season, the odds of defeat would clearly be increased with Drew Lock under center.
Lock was two of six for just three yards and an interception after entering the Rams game.
Though Smith will almost certainly be involved, running back Kenneth Walker III looks set to miss out with an oblique injury. Right tackle Abe Lucas (knee) was listed as questionable but is also likely to be out, though safety Jamal Adams (knee) and versatile defensive back Coby Bryant (toe) are off the injury report and ready to go.
