Dave Clark, who spent seven seasons as a coach for the Detroit Tigers, is back in the big leagues.
Clark, 61, will be the first base coach on Houston Astros manager Joe Espada’s staff, according to MLB.com.
It’s a homecoming for Clark, who ended his playing career with the Astros in 1998; managed the Astros’ Double-A affiliate from 2006-2008; served as interim manager for the big-league club in 2009; and was part of the big-league coaching staff through 2013.
Clark was named to Brad Ausmus’ inaugural coaching staff in 2014 and remained with the club for three seasons under Ron Gardenhire, serving as third base coach and later first base coach. He was not retained under new manager A.J. Hinch.
Clark joins a reshuffled Astros staff. Espada, who served as bench coach under retired manager Dusty Baker, was promoted to the top job. Omar Lopez, who was first base coach under Baker, will become Espada’s bench coach. Clark will take Lopez’s old role.
The coaching assignments, including Clark’s role, were first reported by MLB.com.
A Mississippi native, Clark was a first-round draft pick of the Cleveland Indians in 1983 and spent parts of 13 seasons in the big leagues as an outfielder.
