Did the Kansas City Royals just win the 2024 World Series? That is what the rumor is after signing former SF Giants reliever Will Smith to a one-year, $5 million pact. Jeff Passan of ESPN was the first to report the news.

Many of you probably have hobbies outside of baseball, so I will elaborate. Smith has had a very fortuitous track record lately, winning the World Series in three straight seasons. He won a ring with the Atlanta Braves in 2021, the Houston Astros in 2022, and the Texas Rangers this past season.

And, he is getting ready to bring another championship to Kansas City. Interestingly, Los Angeles Dodgers catcher Will Smith won a World Series with the club in 2020, so make that four straight years for players named Will Smith.

For the lefty reliever, he returns to the team that he debuted with back in 2012. Smith spent the first two years of his career before making stops with the Milwaukee Brewers, Giants, Braves, Astros, and Rangers.

Perhaps, his best run came with San Francisco where he posted a 2.70 ERA, 2.58 FIP, 1.03 WHIP, 12.7 K/9, and a 4.29 SO/W rate in parts of three seasons. This includes a strong 2019 campaign in which he tallied a 2.70 ERA in 63 outings while earning his first and only NL All-Star nod.Oakland Athletics v Texas Rangers

The veteran pitcher became a free agent following that season. He rejected a qualifying offer from the Giants before signing a three-year, $39 million deal with a club option for a fourth season. He became a free agent last year after that club option was declined and signed with the Rangers late in the offseason.

The 34-year-old put together a quality season, recording a 4.40 ERA and a 3.36 FIP across 57.1 frames for the Rangers. The Rangers’ bullpen struggled for much of the year, but it did not impact their ability to win some of the biggest games of the season.

Smith continues to rack up strikeouts at a healthy rate and limiting walks while flashing a slider that continues to be tough on opposing hitters. Plus, he will likely be looked to as a veteran voice for a young Royals club.

SF Giants nightmare comes true as Shohei Ohtani signs with division rivals

The Shohei Ohtani saga finally came to an abrupt conclusion on Saturday. However, it was not the conclusion that SF Giants fans had hoped for as Ohtani himself announced that he would be signing with the division rival Los Angeles Dodgers.

Jeff Passan of ESPN reported that his contract will be for 10 years and $700 million. It will include significant deferrals to allow the Dodgers to spend in the near term and will represent the largest contract in sports history. Unfortunately, the Dodgers may not be done.

The Giants were considered one of the finalists along with the Toronto Blue Jays, Chicago Cubs, and the incumbent Los Angeles Angels. For a long time, Ohtani’s camp had reiterated his desire to play competitive baseball after missing the playoffs for six straight seasons with the Angels.

It is hard to compete with not just the financial strength of the Dodgers, but the non-financial component of playing competitive baseball year after year. The Dodgers have won the NL West in 10 of the last 11 seasons and they seem poised to continue that trend.

Los Angeles has been prepared to add the two-way star for over a year. They cut costs last offseason, which was seen as an odd occurrence given that their ownership group has continuously spent to put the best product on the field. This was seen as a sign of having a lean year in preparation for eventually landing Ohtani. That came to fruition on Saturday.Oakland Athletics v Texas Rangers

The star-studded lineup will consist of MVP-caliber players such as Ohtani, Mookie Betts, and Freddie FreemanWill Smith seemingly gets overlooked as one of the better catchers in baseball and Max Muncy remains an offensive force. That said, the rotation still needs a lot of help due to injuries and potential losses through free agency.

For the Giants, they will pivot to Yoshinobu Yamamoto. They had been targeting both Ohtani and Yamamoto this winter with the hopes of finally landing a star player. At this point, they cannot control what division rivals do, but they can control how they respond.

What that means is doing everything they can to finally land a star player. They have been trying for years and recent struggles are making it more difficult to recruit. Winning the NL West might be out of the question for the foreseeable future, but six teams reach the playoffs. There is still a chance for them to be a playoff-caliber team but they have to take risks again.

The current roster is just not good enough to compete with teams like the Dodgers and the Arizona Diamondbacks, who reached the World Series in 2023. The front office and ownership group has to prove that it is committed to winning. They have not shown it nearly enough recently, but that trend needs to change.
