On Mendy’s selection in the national team, Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson told the club’s official website, “We’re all pleased for Jacob, it’s a good opportunity for him and he is very proud to represent his country. We wish him all the best and will be watching him closely during the tournament.”

Mendy too shared his views on getting picked for the AFCON as he said: “It is a very proud moment for me. It has always been a dream that I can represent my country and to be selected is an honour.”

  The Scorpions have qualified for the continental competition for only the second time in history. The last time they played the tournament was back in 2021 when they reached the quarter-finals. The team will begin their journey in AFCON 2023 on January 15 against reigning champions Senegal.
