The teams met at The Racecourse on December 23 with the Reds securing a 2-0 victory in League Two.

Wrexham have maintained the promotion challenge since then and head into the return clash at Rodney Parade sitting second in the table, two points behind leaders Stockport County with a game in hand.

Parkinson is expecting another competitive match but says Wrexham will be fired up and relishing the occasion.

“It is a quick turnaround but we are really looking forward to another Welsh derby,” said the Reds’ boss.

“It is one of the few grounds I have never been to before.

“There’s a lot of pride at stake, we know that from the first game.

“There’s that extra competitive edge because of the rivalry between the two clubs but it is just important we have a real focus about the game-plan we need to take with us down to Newport to keep our run going.”

Second half goals from James Jones and Elliot Lee enabled Wrexham to pick up three points in December’s clash which was played in windy conditions.

“It is going to be another game similar to the one at home,” added Parkinson.

“Conditions were difficult and both teams had to manage that but we came out on top.

“We won first and second contacts all over the pitch and stood strong as a team.

“A lot of the qualities we showed that day, we are going to have to take them down with us to Newport and more.

“Sometimes conditions dictate what type of game it is going to be and throughout the course of the season you have got to adapt accordingly.”
