Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney left in stitches at Notts County fans’ X-rated reply to Wrexham doc request

Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney’s reaction to receiving an X-rated reply from Notts County fans has gone viral.

The second season of the ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ documentary was released on Disney+ earlier this month after the teaser trailer aired at half-time during the pre-season friendly with Chelsea in July.

It covers Wrexham’s incredible National League win, where they recorded 111 points to secure promotion to League Two for the first time since 2008.

Wrexham were pushed all the way by a brilliant Notts County side who picked up 107 points and ended up following them into the Football League after a play-off final penalty shoot-out win over Chesterfield at Wembley.

Wrexham and Notts County developed a friendly rivalry and played out a stunning five-goal thriller at the Racecourse Ground, where Ben Foster saved a stoppage time penalty.

Reynolds spoke glowingly about the Magpies, paid tribute to their late chief executive Jason Turner and supported them in the play-offs.

But as seems as though it isn’t quite a mutual respect and Reynolds and McElhenney found that out. A producer for the series got in touch with a supporters group and asked if they would take part in the documentary.

Reynolds and McElhenney were left in stitches, agreeing that the response was “so good” that they had to include it in the documentary in some capacity.

The first five episodes of the new series are live, with the remaining ten dropping in the coming weeks.

Wrexham are currently seventh in League Two on 15 points from nine games but Notts County lead the way on 20 points after a stunning start to the season.

The two sides will meet at Meadow Lane on 28 October.

Wrexham’s Hollywood owners, Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenny have joined a group of investors in taking a stake in the Alpine F1 team.

Back in 2021, Reynolds and McElhenny bought Welsh side Wrexham and have led them back to the English Football League after a 15-year absence when they secured the National League title last season.

On Monday, it was confirmed that Reynolds and McElhenney are taking a 24 per cent equity stake in Alpine alongside Otro Capital and RedBird Capital Partners.

After an injection of €200 million from the new investor group, Alpine are now believed to be valued at €900 million.

The Oxfordshire-based team, who are owned by the Renault Group are currently fifth in the F1 constructor’s championship.

Renault Group CEO Luca de Meo spoke about the new partnership.

He said: “Formula 1 and Alpine are strategic assets for Renault Group.

“Over the past two years, we have re-ignited Alpine, capitalising on its iconic A110 sports coupe, boosting it by entering Formula 1, where it aims to become a championship contender. This partnership will accelerate Alpine F1 development by diversifying revenue drivers and increasing brand value

Alpine’s CEO, Laurent Rossi added: “This association is an important step to enhance our performance at all levels. First, Otro Capital, RedBird Capital Partners and Maximum Effort Investments, as international players with strong track record in the sports industry, will bring their recognised expertise to boost our media and marketing strategy, essential to support our sporting performance over the long term.

“Second, the incremental revenue generated will in turn be reinvested in the team, in order to further accelerate our Mountain Climber plan, aimed at catching up with top teams in terms of state-of-the-art facilities and equipment.”

Alpine’s drivers Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly are ninth and 10th in the driver’s championship respectively.

F1 will return this weekend with the Austrian Grand Prix taking place on Sunday.

Wrexham owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney broke celebrity rule they set themselves

Wrexham owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have admitted to breaking a celebrity rule they introduced themselves.

The Hollywood pair made a number of promises when they purchased the Red Dragons in February 2021, one of which was a £2 million investment.

Others included increasing Wrexham’s global appeal, renovating the Racecourse Ground and improving training facilities.

But there was one rule that the owners have ultimately ended up breaking and it stemmed from the FA trophy final defeat to Bromley.

Both were in attendance with their respective families and celebrated a last-gasp disallowed equaliser when Jake Hyde’s header was ruled offside by the linesman.

Reynolds and McElhenney went mental but had to be told the offside rule by David Beckham, who was sat close to them.

From that point onwards, the duo made a pact to not have any celebrities present at games, feeling as though they were “bad luck charms”

However that has been completely abolished, with the likes of Will Ferrell, Charlie Day and Paul Rudd among the big names to have turned up at the Racecourse.

“We had an unofficial rule that we didn’t stick to, Ryan after we lost at Wembley last year in the FA Trophy final,” McElhenney said on the RobRyanRed – Wrexham AFC Podcast.

“We decided no more celebrities as they were bad luck charms, but I guess we don’t have to worry about that anymore.”

Reynolds chimed in: “Yeah, it sort of worked out. Will [Ferrell] saw a great game, I know that. Emma [Corrin] saw an amazing match as well. Glenn [Howerton], Charlie [Day], and Kaitlin [Olson] saw a great one, and then, of course, Paul [Rudd] and Joe Russo saw the one [title-winning game] to end it.”

Day, who starred in It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia with McElhenney alongside McElhenney, might not be getting invited back for another game though.

As revealed by McElhenney on the podcast, the 47-year-old nearly landed himself a police record after drinking alcohol in view of the pitch – completely unaware of the rule prohibiting it being introduced as part of The Sporting Events (Control of Alcohol etc.) Act of 1985.

Plenty of celebrities will likely be cheering Wrexham on in the summer as they are playing both Chelsea and Manchester United across the pond in lucrative pre-season fixtures in North Carolina and San Diego.

There’s also the small matter of ‘The Soccer Tournament’, where Wrexham are competing and have even signed up their owners to play.

Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have helped completely change things for Wrexham AFC and the club is now far more valuable thanks to the pair.

It’s only a couple of years ago that Reynolds and McElhenney suddenly found themselves involved in football, a sport that they had very little knowledge of.

In fact the pair even had to be taught the offside rule during a game by none other than David Beckham, as they celebrated what they believed was a goal.

So it would certainly make you wonder why in the world they’d spend £2 million to buy the then non-league team, as they did back in 2020.

The pair found out they could have lost another £1 million if they’d failed at getting promoted back into the Football League this season, having not managed it in the previous campaign.

Thankfully for the pair and their fans they did achieve getting back into League Two, after 15 years in the National League, with the club now set for a £17 million windfall.

The value of the club has also gone up massively since it was bought by the Deadpool star and Always Sunny in Philadelphia creator.

According to research from investment bank Saxo, the club has now tripled in value in the past three years thanks to a number of factors.

The research says that deals with the likes of TikTok, Aviation American Gin, Expedia and Vistaprint have helped boost the club’s value.

On top of that, they have raked in £2.5 million from signing a deal with Disney for the behind the scenes ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ documentary, that is set for a second series which will show the promotion season.

Anaam Raza of Saxo explained, “The investment was centred towards making ‘Welcome to Wrexham’, a Netflix-style docu-series that tracked the purchase, investment in the club and the journey of their Hollywood owners at the helm.

“After debuting on FX in the States in August 2022, it received a 97% audience score and was immediately signed for a second season. The club would have made roughly $400,000 (£321k) per hour of content for the eight-part series which equates to around $3.2m (£2.57m).

“Following promotion, Wrexham’s social media accounts have been supercharged. Since the takeover, their Twitter following has grown by 1,040%, their Instagram following has increased by 3,111% and they have gone from no followers on TikTok to 1.2 million.

“The number of fans buying season tickets has nearly tripled; they have also signed lucrative kit sponsorship deals with companies such as TikTok, Aviation American Gin, Expedia and Vistaprint. However, the club’s global reach is perhaps the most impressive success; ESPN revealed their FA Cup second round viewing figures increased by 858% as a direct result of showcasing Wrexham – meaning around 100 million households will have watched the Red Dragons this season.

“With the team now hoping to achieve back-to-back promotions next season, a new series of Welcome to Wrexham on the cusp and more bankable sponsorships in place including a friendly against Manchester United in the summer, the Hollywood duo could quite easily walk away at this point by sanctioning a sale of Wrexham nearing the $10 million (£8 million) mark and make a 300% increase on their initial investment based on the trajectory and worldwide notoriety of the club.”

The team’s popularity is likely to only be increased by a move up to League Two especially now Sky Sports will be showing more games from next season.

They will also be taking on Premier League giants Manchester United in a friendly in the US over the summer, whilst McElhenney and Reynolds will even represent the Welsh side in a five-a-side tournament.
