Signing free agent Justin Turner, the Toronto Blue Jays have replaced some of the offense lost when Matt Chapman left as a free agent.
The right-handed hitting Turner, 39, was signed by the Blue Jays to a one-year, $13 million contract, with an additional $1.5 million available in incentives.
As noted by Fangraphs, signing Turner increases the estimated 2024 Blue Jays payroll to $238 million, or $24 million more than their payroll last season.
The versatile Turner may be the team’s designated hitter, or he could take over third base.
Turner can add an extra “jolt” to the Blue Jays lineup.
Earlier in the offseason, the Blue Jays added utility infielder/outfielder Isiah Kiner-Felefa as a free agent.
And still without a team, it remains possible that free agent Matt Chapman could return to the Blue Jays. Stranger things have happened.
