Leicester City boss Enzo Maresca has revealed he still isn’t sure why Chelsea opted to recall Cesare Casadei from his loan spell in January.
Casadei joined the Foxes in the summer on loan until the end of the season. The Italian midfielder started only eight of his 25 Championship appearances but he was set for a run in the team after Wilfred Ndidi suffered an injury.
However, Chelsea recalled the 21-year-old in the middle of January after the 3-1 defeat to Coventry City. Leicester’s failure to sign another midfielder meant Maresca is incredibly short in midfield.
“We were surprised Casadei went back to Chelsea,” Maresca said in January. “They own him so they can decide – we can’t do anything. We didn’t expect it, but we deal with it.”
Since returning to the Premier League side, Casadei has only played 17 minutes. Earlier this week, an anonymous source told The Athletic that the decision was made due his minute at Leicester.
