It looks set to be an exciting and tense last couple of months in the Championship promotion race as we enter the end-of-season run-in.
A 2-0 win over Millwall before the international break, coupled with Leicester City’s involvement in the FA Cup, saw Leeds United climb above their rivals and to the top of the table on goal difference. Leicester do though have a game in hand.
It’s a situation that many fans may have not felt was possible just a few weeks ago, with Leicester looking like they would run away with the league and easily claim the title. A slight slip-up by Enzo Maresca’s men, plus the Whites’ form since Christmas has seen the lead evaporate.
The international break gives teams the chance to take a break and take stock of how the season is playing out. Leeds now have eight games remaining, after which they will know their fate, Ipswich continue to snap at their heels and are just one point behind.
While every game remaining is of the utmost importance, some stand out more than others. With that in mind, here are three key games for Leeds as they look to return to the Premier League at the first time of asking.
Hull City (H), Mon 1 April, 8pm kick-off
Ideally, at this time of the season, games will come against teams without too much to play for. That won’t be the case when Hull City travel to Elland Road on Easter Monday.
The Tigers are currently seventh in the league, three points behind Norwich in sixth place. They are one of several teams with their eyes on competing in the play-offs at the end of the season.
Hull have been no strangers to picking up results against teams above them so far this campaign. They led twice against Leicester in the 2-2 home draw before the international break, and picked up all three points from their visit to the King Power Stadium in September, they also ended Southampton’s impressive unbeaten run last month while the reverse fixture against Leeds ended in a 0-0 draw.
More intrigue will be added to the match with Leicester taking on Norwich in the early kick-off at the King Power Stadium. It will be the second time in three days that the Foxes will be in action before Leeds kick-off.
