Aston Villa manager Unai Emery. As per HITC (8 April), Villa are one of several Premier League clubs interested in Ndidi and monitoring the midfielder’s situation at Leicester City ahead of the summer.

Ndidi is out of contract at the King Power Stadium in June, with the Foxes looking increasingly likely to lose the 27-year-old on a free transfer.

And King – speaking exclusively to Villa News – has questioned why Ndidi hasn’t re-signed with his current club.

“Signing free agents, such as Ndidi, can certainly be beneficial for clubs, especially if those players are brought in for free and then go on to become successful,” King said.

“What I am wondering is why is he leaving Leicester? Why haven’t they been able to agree on a new contract?

“He has interest from top Premier League sides it seems, and his agent would certainly be able to use that in any contract negotiations.”Aston Villa manager Unai Emery.

Could Wilfred Ndidi improve Aston Villa under Unai Emery?

If Villa were to sign Ndidi, it would certainly be low-risk.

Bringing in an experienced Premier League player for free is likely to have more upside than downside, and Ndidi is someone who has demonstrated quality playing in England’s top flight.

He is a former FA Cup winner in the prime of his career, and with Villa set to qualify for some form of European football next season, squad depth will be important for Unai Emery.

With no transfer fee required, this could perhaps be a smart move considering the club’s recent financial troubles.
