The 33-year-old has been a free agent since he departed Premier League side Nottingham Forest in the Summer after his three-year spell came to a conclusion and now he departs Hillsborough without signing a contract with the club.
Fresh from his early 2022 loan spell with Championship side Birmingham City, Taylor returned to the City Ground as Forest began preparation for life in the Premier League.
However, Taylor only made the match-day squad twice during the entire campaign with both of those matches being the club’s opening two games of the Premier League season.
In fact, the only time Taylor played for Nottingham Forest was during the U21s’ final match of the season where he scored during a 4-3 win against Aston Villa. He did make two appearances whilst on international duty, scoring three goals.
A poor start to the season
It’s fair to say that Sheffield Wednesday have had a nightmare start to the 2023/24 Championship season following their promotion during the previous campaign.
The club slipped to their eighth league defeat of the season during last night’s 1-0 loss to West Bromwich Albion and are yet to win any of their opening ten matches. This leaves them bottom of the division and seven points off safety.
What’s been said?
Journalist Darren Witcoop confirmed Taylor’s exit on Twitter by stating…
‘Free agent Lyle Taylor is no longer training with Sheffield Wednesday following a trial spell with the Championship strugglers.’
Writer’s View
Sheffield Wednesday are yet to win in the league and are struggling to score goals so the fact that they’ve not offered Taylor a contract speaks one of two different scenarios.
Either Taylor wasn’t the type of striker that the club needed or there was an issue in terms of hit fitness or performances during training that convinced the club not to sign the striker.
Regardless, Sheffield Wednesday not signing a striker isn’t a sight that the fans will like to see, especially with a difficult clash against Huddersfield Town on the horizon.
