Tanner Banks took the mound after a three-hour rain delay and struck out pinch-hitter Iván Herrera in the bottom of the 10th inning, helping the Chicago White Sox secure a 6-5 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Saturday night. This win ended their four-game losing streak.

“It’s a unique experience, but I’m glad we came out on top,” said White Sox manager Pedro Grifol. “That would have been a tough loss to take. We saw some strong performances. It was a great team effort.”

Tommy Pham’s single in the top of the 10th inning gave the White Sox the lead, and they were close to sealing the win when crew chief Dan Iassogna halted the game and called the grounds crew onto the field after John Brebbia’s first pitch to Nolan Gorman.

“I enjoy playing in challenging conditions,” Brebbia commented. “It’s not often you get to play in heavy rain because they usually stop the game, so I try to make the most of it. But it’s chaotic when it’s raining like that. You never know what might happen. It adds some excitement.”

After the lengthy delay of 3 hours and 3 minutes, Banks entered the game and quickly got Herrera out with just four pitches, earning his first save of the season.
