Further details have emerged in the on-going speculation that Coventry City are set to sign Red Star Belgrade midfielder Marko Stamenic.
Serbian publication Sportal reported last week that the club, otherwise known as FK Crvena Zvezda, have sold the holding midfielder to the Sky Blues for a ‘staggering €5m’ (£4.2m) only a year after joining the club for free from Copenhagen.
Another Serbian outlet, Mozzart Sport, has corroborated those claims and added that although the club “quickly accepted Coventry ’s offer,” it says the player “hesitated and hesitated” during the day the deal was being negotiated. The report states that the selling club have also negotiated a 10 percent sell-on clause for the next sale of the player, albeit that is fairly standard these days but, nevertheless, it is added detail to the claims that Stamenic is heading to the Championship club.
Meanwhile, Red Star have this week announced the signing of central midfielder Dalsio Gomes on a two-year contract from APOEL Nicosia, although it is not known if the Portuguese/ Guinea-Bissau national is seen as a direct replacement for Stamenic.
The report says: “Although he had a contract until 2027, the offer from the English second division Coventry was in the range of those that could not be refused. The club quickly accepted Coventry’s offer, the player hesitated and hesitated, but during the day he also agreed to move to the island.”
The New Zealand international of Serbian origin is 22 years old and arrived in Europe four years ago when he signed for Copenhagen. He spent one season on loan in Koge, and a year and a half ago he agreed to sign for Crvena Zvezda, for whom he played 35 games in all competitions and scored two goals.
