St James’ Park could become even bigger

Newcastle are planning to expand St James’ Park and have begun a feasibility study on how to develop their current stands.

The Magpies’ home is renowned for its seriously tall away end, with fans often recalling climbing up the numerous flights of stairs to get to their seats.

But now, the club is planning to develop the Gallowgate End and the East Stand of the ground to similar heights.

Those stands sit considerably lower than the Milburn and Leazes stand and an expansion to them would give the stadium a more bowl-like appearance.

According to Telegraph Sport, the club are waiting to hear back from specialist architects about what building work will be possible and how much it would cost.

No plans have been put into place yet, but the club has a firm commitment to help match the ground’s capacity with ticket demands, which far exceed what they have currently available.

The estimated eventual capacity of the stadium could rise from 52,000 to 65,000 should both the Gallowgate and East Stand be expanded.

St James’ Park is currently the seventh-biggest ground in the Premier League, falling behind West Ham and Tottenham following their moves to their new stadiums.

The expansion would focus on these two stands

But should they be able to welcome 65,000 on match days, their home will be the second biggest in the league.

Manchester United will remain top with a capacity of 74,310

Meanwhile, Newcastle will overtake Spurs’ 62,850-seater stadium, West Ham’s 62,500, Arsenal’s 60,704, Man City’s 53,400 and Liverpool’s 53,394.St James’ Park could become even bigger

The smallest ground in the Premier League this season is promoted Luton’s Kenilworth Road, which holds 10,356.
