Sunderland have been linked with a move for Ireland international Alan Browne, as reported by the Northern Echo.

Black Cats boss Regis Le Bris is looking to catch up on lost time after his late appointment, and the former Preston man has fallen onto his radar. With over 400 appearances for Preston, almost 350 of those in the Championship, the midfielder offers the experience Sunderland needs in the middle of the park.

The 29-year-old opted not to sign a new deal at Deepdale and is looking for his second English club in ten years. Experience is something the young boss has already spoken openly about as he looks to avoid the slump the club suffered last season.

“We are thinking about one or two more experienced players, who know the Championship very well, for example, and have high standards when it comes to training,” said Le Bris. “They can help dictate the way of playing and lead the team during the game.”

Browne is certainly experienced. He is valued at €3 million by Transfermarkt (£2.5 million), and he’s never been involved in a domestic transfer, having joined Preston from Cork City in 2014. Since then, he’s gone on to represent Ireland 35 times, scoring five goals, including three in 2022.
