Leeds United target Ajax defender who head coach says is ‘ready to leave’

Leeds United are interested in signing Ajax fullback Owen Wijndal. The 24-year old is also being courted by multiple clubs around Europe including Galatasaray and Rayo Vallecano.

According to TransferwatchNL, the defender has his sights set on a move to England, with Leeds United set as the reported destination. Wijndal joined Ajax in 2022 from AZ Alkmaar. The defender only made two league appearances for Ajax last season before joining Royal Antwerp on loan

Leeds United won their first game of the league season last Friday, and after the game, head Coach Daniel Farke believes the club needs reinforcements ahead of the transfer deadline.

Farke wants cover for Junior Firpo, who has proven to be unreliable due to fitness and injury concerns. Firpo managed to play 26 league games last season, more games than he had played in the last two seasons.

Ajax want to offload Owen Wijndal

According to the report from TransferwatchNL, Ajax are willing to part ways with Wijndal among other players who are surplus to requirements at the club.

The Eredivisie club are eager to get Wijndal’s £40,000 a week wages off the books for this season. According to Voetbal Primeur, Ajax are open to a permanent or loan deal. Galatasaray and Werder Bremen are also said to be interested.

Head coach Francesco Farioli said some players would be leaving the club, after he demoted them to train with the B team:

“The situation is quite clear”, Farioli refers to the possible transfers of the players. “It’s not just up to us, but also to the market. The boys did very well in the six weeks they were with us.”

“It was a very difficult decision for me to put them back to the promising team,” says the Italian coach. “But the reality is that they are still Ajax players. We don’t know yet if they left at the end of the window or if they will stay with us.”
