Leeds United’s board could finally address their lack of depth at left-back and solve a problem than Daniel Farke inherited.

The Whites have been linked with a move for Ajax full-back Owen Wijndal ahead of the summer transfer deadline, with Galatasaray, Werder Bremen and Real Vallecano also said to be keen on a move for the 24-year-old. Farke’s side are reportedly keen on a loan move for the Dutch international.

After coming through the youth ranks at AZ Alkmaar’s illustrious academy, Ajax signed the promising full-back in 2022 on a €10million deal. However, he’s struggled to nail down a consistent starting place in de Godenzonen starting XI and spent last season on loan with Belgian Pro League outfit Royal Antwerp.

Leeds have lacked options on the left-hand side of their defence, with Junior Firpo the only out-and-out defender on that side of the pitch. Wijndal would add some much needed depth in that area of the pitch, and the Zaandam-born defender made a bold claim about his ability earlier on in his career.

Speaking to Voetbal back in 2021, he labelled himself as the ‘best left-back in the Netherlands.’ A high opinion of himself for someone at such a young age.

He said: “I am the best left back in the Netherlands. That is my opinion and I think I should be able to say that. Then I don’t include Daley Blind, because he normally plays centrally at Ajax. Nicolás Tagliafico and Philipp Max are of course also great backs, but I think I’m just a bit better.
