Mats Hummels decided to join Roma on a free transfer after rejecting offers from West Ham and Brighton, among others, according to Calciomercato.
The news outlet reported on 4 September that the Germany international will be earning annual wages of £1.69million net excluding bonuses at the Italian club.
Roma took to their official website on 4 September to confirm they’ve signed the 35-year-old who made the top 30 list in the Ballon d’Or contenders.
Mats Hummels may have had multiple reasons to reject West Ham
The Hammers explored a move for Hummels as they’re eyeing an experienced veteran in defence.
His decision to join Roma over the Hammers might be largely attributed to the assurance of playing time.
At Roma, Hummels likely saw an opportunity to be a key figure in the defence, given his experience and pedigree, which might not have been guaranteed at West Ham.
The Hammers, having signed Jean-Clair Todibo and Max Kilman this summer, might have viewed the 35-year-old as a rotational option or third or fourth choice, which could limit his on-pitch influence.
Moreover, the club might be looking at integrating players proven in the Premier League, which could have placed Hummels at a disadvantage.
The tempo of the Italian game is also slower and that perhaps would suit the centre-back best at this stage in his career.
In other West Ham news, the club are on the verge of signing a new free agent and ExWHUEmployee has issued a transfer update.
