The 18-year-old has been made to wait for his first start in Spurs colours since leaving Leeds for a fee of £40m in the summer. The England U21 star had come on as a sub in two Premier League games prior.

But he was unused in Tottenham’s last two, in the form of defeats to Newcastle and Arsenal. Last night, Gray was handed a start at right-back against Coventry City in the Carabao Cup, a 2-1 Tottenham win.

Djed Spence equalised on 88 minutes after Brandon Thomas-Asante’s opener before Brennan Johnson scored an injury-time winner. Gray was solid without being exceptional, outshone by Spurs man Spence.

Now manager of Australian side Central Coast Mariners, Jackson worked with Gray while manager of the U21 side at Leeds. He recalls Gray’s assist during a 4-1 loss to Tranmere Rovers in the EFL Trophy.

Wearing no.63 aged just 15, Gray picked up the ball in midfield and turned a man before threading a pass into Amari Miller to score Leeds’ only goal. Jackson told Sky Sports he thought Gray would be “special”.

“One game stands out for me and it was in the Papa John’s with the 23’s. We had a really young team out. Archie played in that game and he got on the ball in the middle, he protected the ball, used his strength.

“Think he was 15 at the time. He played a pass which probably no other played would have played on the pitch particularly at 15, to Amari Miller. I remember thinking on the sideline, ooh that’s a little bit special.”
