Wrexham’s Hollywood owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney will face another group of famous owners as the Class of 92’s Salford City travel to Wales on Saturday
When Wrexham face Salford City in League 2 this weekend, two renowned ownership groups will be pitted against one another – but who can lay claim to a greater net worth?
Back in November 2020, Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds teamed with Rob McElhenney – famed for creating and starring in ‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’ – to purchase Wrexham for £2.25m. The duo have become symbols of Welsh football around the world thanks to the exposure their platforms have bought to the club and area, largely though the popular Disney+ documentary titled ‘Welcome to Wrexham’.
After 15 years outside the football league, the Red Dragons secured the National League title to clinch promotion to League 2. Wrexham currently sit seventh in the fourth-tier of English football, and they are preparing to face another club with illustrious owners in the form of Salford City.
In 2014, Salford were taken over by a group of former ManchesterN United players who made up the iconic crop of youth academy products dubbed the ‘ Class of 92 ’: Nicky Butt, Ryan Giggs, Gary Neville, Phil eville and Paul Scholes. Each man owns 10 percent of Salford, with England football icon David Beckham purchasing his own 10 percent share from Singaporean businessman Peter Lim, who owns the remaining majority share in the Greater Manchester club.
But which glitzy ownership collaboration has a greater net worth? Reynolds is a Hollywood megastar who has starred in numerous films, but it is his business ventures that drive his true wealth.
The Canadian, who sits on the board of the Match Group, sold his ownership stake in Aviation Gin to Diageo for £503 million. It means his current net worth is estimates to be £288m.
Meanwhile, his Wrexham sidekick McElhenney is less wealthy but hardly short of money himself. The ‘Always Sunny’ star has a reported net worth of around £50 million following his success in the long-running sitcom, as well as his Apple TV series Mythic Quest. This means Reynolds and McElhenney – the Wrexham co-owners – have a shared net worth of £338m
