Former Alabama defensive back DeVonta Smith has committed to Notre Dame, as reported by Pete Nakos of On3. Smith, who entered the transfer portal just last Saturday, made his decision quickly, securing his next destination within 48 hours. This rapid turnaround highlights the growing trend of athletes transitioning to new programs with greater speed and clarity.
In the 2023 season, Smith served as Alabama’s starting HUSKY (a position often referred to as the nickel defensive back). Over the course of the season, he totaled 30 tackles and was tied for third on the team with five pass breakups. Additionally, Smith made his mark with a forced fumble and a fumble recovery, showcasing his ability to impact games in multiple ways.
Smith’s transfer is part of a broader wave of departures from Alabama, as he becomes the 13th player to enter the transfer portal. Other notable players who have followed suit include quarterback Dylan Lonergan, running back Justice Haynes, defensive linemen Jeheim Oatis and Hunter Osborne, edge rusher Keanu Koht, cornerback Jahlil Hurley, and wide receivers Kobe Prentice, Caleb Odom, and Kendrick Law. Offensive linemen Miles McVay and Naquil Betrand, as well as tight end Danny Lewis Jr., have also entered the portal. Interestingly, Lewis Jr. initially announced his intention to transfer but later rescinded his decision.
Smith’s impact on the field in 2023 was notable, though much of his earlier career was defined by his work on special teams after recovering from an injury. He primarily contributed in that area in the 2022 season, but in 2023, his role expanded as he was deployed as a starting HUSKY. Standing 6 feet tall and weighing 205 pounds, Smith hails from La Salle High School in Cincinnati, Ohio. In the 2021 recruiting class, he was highly regarded, earning a consensus ranking as the No. 13 cornerback in the nation, the No. 7 prospect in Ohio, and the No. 179 recruit overall.
The NCAA transfer portal officially opened on December 9, with a deadline of December 28 for players to enter. A spring transfer window is also available, opening on April 16 and closing on April 25, providing another opportunity for athletes to explore new schools. As college football continues to evolve, the transfer portal remains a significant factor in player movement, allowing athletes to pursue new opportunities in the hopes of advancing their careers.
Smith’s swift decision to transfer is a reflection of the growing trend in college football, where athletes are increasingly prioritizing their future success and seeking programs that align with their goals. His move to Notre Dame is sure to add depth and skill to their secondary as the Fighting Irish prepare for the 2024 season.
