Making something out of nothing: three qualities that three Celtics can improve on.
Much time and effort is spent on correcting shortcomings, but Derrick White, Jayson Tatum, and Robert Williams are primed to improve on areas they’re already pretty excellent at.
In the off season, much is made of players learning new talents and converting strengths into shortcomings. New skills are the lifeblood of player development for good reason. G-Leaguers become role players, role players become starters, and starters become stars. But it’s also necessary to hone what you’re currently strong at, to disregard all conventional wisdom and convert good into better.

Every player on the roster has the potential to improve in some way.

Derrick White’s head, shoulders, knees and toes, knees and toes, knees and toes

Derrick White had a 31.2% three-point percentage in the 21-22 season. Given what he performed last year, that seems almost impossible. White came from the ashes like a shard of ash driven by the wind and shot a firmly above-average 38% on approximately 5 three-point attempts per game in 22-23.

That is an improvement in one’s career trajectory. It lifts any NBA point guard’s hard ceiling imposed by a lack of shooting. It’s also a little deceiving given he shot 34.6% the previous year. Still a long way towards 38%, but much better than 21-22.

One could attribute it to larger sample sizes or more open shots, but as is often the case with White, it’s more complicated. Derrick White worked hard. Derrick White “ran the hard yards,” as my favorite gravel-munching, exhaust pipe-smoking, worm-enjoying English manager would put it.

I employ a running metaphor for one reason only: Derrick White healed his legs. White’s issue was not his top half, however he did shoot the ball a little low and has rectified that as well (I hope, it’s hard to tell). His unpredictability in takeoff on every jump shot was definitely holding him back.
