Northampton Town Women joint-managers Josh Oldfield and Liam Williams were pleased with their side’s 1-0 win at home to Boldmere St. Michaels in the FA Women’s National League Division One Midlands on Thursday.

Vicky Barrett scored the Cobblers’ goal as they secured a third consecutive victory in all competitions in the first ever meeting between the two sides. Their opponents were relegated from the FAWNL Northern Premier Division last season.

“It’s an important three points because it was a really tough game,” Williams said.

“They moved the ball around really well, but other than the last five minutes when Katie McLean had to make a number of unbelievable saves, they didn’t trouble us too much.

“We’re really pleased with how we defended throughout the game, and we carried a threat through our forward players, as always.

“It was nice to score a goal from a set-piece, and we were good value for the win.”

Oldfield added: “There have been times this season when we’ve challenged the girls to show more character.

“They’ve shown lots of character and togetherness recently, and it was evident again tonight.

“It was a difficult game and we had to dig deep and put our bodies on the line, so we’re happy to have come away with a win.

“We were outstanding in the way that we battled, and the girls deserve credit for a hard-fought 1-0 win at home.”

The Cobblers enter the Women’s FA Cup in the third qualifying round a week on Sunday. They welcome West Midlands Regional Women’s Football League Premier Division outfit Coventry Sphinx to Fernie Fields Sports Ground for a 2pm kick-off. Season tickets are NOT valid for this fixture. Tickets are available from ntfcdirect.co.uk and on the gate.
