Pundit predicts ‘huge’ West Ham United clash v Aston Villa as ‘very, very good’ claim made
We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium…
Frank McAvennie believes it would be great if West Ham United can get something from their “huge” clash with Aston Villa.
The Hammers take on Unai Emery’s men on Sunday (22 October), in what is the first match back for both clubs following the latest international break.
Villa Park plays host to the meeting, with the home side two points and two places ahead of the visitors in the Premier League table.
Speaking to West Ham Zone, McAvennie said: “It’s going to be huge. It depends on who comes back fit after the international break, so it will be interesting. Aston Villa are a good team, to go there and get something out of the game would be great.
“Let Villa come on and then can attack them, and attack with pace. It’s not my cup of tea, but they are very, very good at it. They are getting results.”
Emery’s side go into the game on the back of a 1-1 draw with Wolves earlier this month, with the Hammers having drawn 2-2 with Newcastle United.
Both clubs have had plenty of players away on international duty, with fatigue levels therefore certain to play a part at Villa Park.
The likes of Ollie Watkins, John McGinn and Emiliano Martinez among others will all return from their respective nations for Emery.
David Moyes meanwhile will expect to welcome back players such as Jarrod Bowen, Michail Antonio and Tomas Soucek among others.
Both managers may have one eye on their upcoming European trips, with Villa travelling to AZ Alkmaar in the Europa Conference League on Thursday (26 October) and West Ham travelling to Olympiacos in the Europa League on the same day.
