Thompson’s interim tenure begins with a morale-boosting victory over York.
Steve Thompson’s tenure as Latics interim manager got off to a flying start last night (Tuesday).
Thompson, who took over for the fired David Unsworth on Sunday, led his team to a 2-0 National League victory over York.
Joe Nuttall and Alex Reid goals sent Latics clear of the relegation zone.
They took the lead in the eighth minute courtesy to some excellent effort by Devarn Green.
He did an excellent job of picking out Nuttall just inside the box, with the forward turning and finishing in the bottom corner with a great finish.
Reid got a second late in the game when he outmuscled a defender before turning and rifling home.
“We’ve got a good squad in there, there’s competition for places, we’ve got to make sure we keep kicking on,” Thompson remarked after the game.
“There’s a lot to work on, but I’m happy with the three points, and the locker room is happy as well.”
Latics, who are currently 19th in the standings, return to Boundary Park on Saturday to face Oxford City.
