Bristol City v Ipswich Town: Kieran McKenna’s pre-match thoughts
The Blues haven’t played since beating Preston North End 4-2 on October 7, with the international break and Friday’s weather-related cancellation combining for a lengthy enforced pause.
But McKenna said his side are raring to go as they head to Bristol City tomorrow night looking to continue their brilliant start to the season.
“We had a good session on Saturday morning at the training ground and we’ve had a couple of good days’ training now, so we’re ready for the game.”
He added: “You don’t get that adrenaline from the game and the fatigue that then brings, so we were able to get some good work into the squad on Saturday morning.
“That was the benefit, we always try to take the positives out of a situation. We got back a little bit earlier on Friday and were able to have a really good work day for the squad on Saturday morning, and hopefully that will help us over the next few weeks.”
Asked what he’s expecting from the mid-table Robins, he replied: “A really tough game on a Wednesday night.
“They play with a lot of energy, a really hard-running team, really honest group and obviously good players – they’ve been in the Championship for a good amount of time and always been competitive, and they’ve been really competitive in all their games this season, so we’re looking forward to the game.
“I think it will hopefully be quite an open game, both teams with forward intent and it should make for a good match.
“We’ve respected the opponent as we do with everybody and now it’s just about trying to deliver a performance.
“We feel like we’ve been waiting a while for a game now, so everyone’s itching to get to Wednesday night and get the game started.”
He added: “The margins between teams are so little and we’ll have to be at our very, very best to compete there on a Wednesday night.
“We are fully prepared for what we’re going into, we know it’s a big game – but it’s one we look forward to.
“It’s going to be great to get out in front of the supporters, Preston feels a long time ago now and we can’t wait to get going again.”
And McKenna said those Town fans can play a huge part in the game, with more than 3,000 due to travel to Ashton Gate tomorrow.
“They have a massive part to play, that’s going to be fantastic, it really will,” he enthused.
“When you get used to playing games and going out there and trying to perform in front of our supporters, the players miss it when you have a couple of weeks without it.
“Friday night was frustrating for everyone, especially those who travelled, so those who are making a big trip down on Wednesday, we’re looking forward to having them at our backs and we’ll go out and do everything we can to give them a good night.”
In terms of injuries, the club are yet to establish a time-frame for Wes Burns (shoulder) to return, while McKenna confirmed that striker Freddie Ladapo will also miss the trip with his Achilles injury.
