With a fabulous comeback, Matt Campbell survived a match darts against Dylan Slevin to finally book in place in round two of the Players Championship Finals in a last leg decider.
“I got very lucky,” Campbell admits post-match in conversation with Online Darts. “Dylan missed darts to go up 3-0, 4-1, 5-1, so I feel fortunate enough to win that match.”
Although often regarded as a tough draw, Campbell’s standout TV performances have been few and far between in recent years. “I believe I could gain an extra one or two gears but we’ll see if that happens,” Campbell analyses.
Being a proud Canadian, Campbell has the extra struggle to deal with of the constant travelling back and forth from North America. “It’s tough like the flying back and forth. Once I’m home, it’s just strictly kids and family time. So I don’t really practice when I come back. When I’m at my peak, I believe it’s when I’m over here for a month or so playing every day.”
So could we see Campbell follow in the footsteps of players like Damon Heta, and make the full-time switch to England and commit to life as a darter? “No zero chance. My family always come first, so to me this will always be a hobby even though it pays the bills,” Campbell answers defiantly.
