Breaking News: As he waved farewell to his teammates and supporters, the Mets have formally confirmed the signing of the Astros promising reliever.
A former Houston Astros slugger could be moved during the offseason, though the priority level for the move is considered low.
SportsNet 590 host and SportsNet 360 writer Jeff Blair reported on Monday that the Blue Jays may be interested in moving George Springer this offseason.
The 34-year-old right fielder signed a six-year, $150 million contract with the Blue Jays before the 2021 season. It has three years left on a deal that pays him a base salary of $22.5 million each season.
The deal also comes with a no-trade clause that allows Springer to select eight teams on a yearly basis that he cannot be traded to without his consent.
It’s possible this may have something to do with the Blue Jays’ rumored pursuit of Shohei Ohtani, who is reportedly fielding multiple offers of more than $500 million. The Blue Jays are not considered the favorite, but if they were able to sign Ohtani, Springer’s contract may be a casualty of the money necessary to sign the two-way superstar.
