Southampton’s defeat at Bristol City would not draw Daniel Farke into making any Leeds United proclamations, though he did make a Leicester City admission. The Foxes have looked unstoppable at the top of the Championship since the opening weeks of the campaign and Farke’s admitted it will be difficult to catch them.
The Whites registered their seventh consecutive league win on Tuesday night at Swansea City, moving into second place in the table after the Saints lost at Ashton Gate. The Hampshire side still have a game in hand and Farke was not about to start talking about pivotal evenings with the momentum swing of the night’s results.
The German, who has won two of the five last titles at this level, continues to talk about overall win tallies and point averages as he pushes Leeds towards spring. Farke would never say never, but the 12-point gap to Leicester is looking formidable with 14 matches left to play.
“The win for us is important,” said Farke, when asked about the significance of Southampton’s loss. “It’s just about us, it’s just about what we do and our points tally, our point average.
“I mentioned before, if you want to finish in a top position, you need a special amount of wins in the season. We are on a good path right now and if you want to finish in the top positions in the league, you need a special point average per game.
“We are also on a top path at the moment, even with a better point average than two. So this is quite, quite impressive. In the last 20 years, normally the point average of two was always enough to finish in position one.
“It will be difficult with Leicester during this season, but overall we are playing the best season, in terms of points, in the history of this club and that’s quite impressive. This is after really difficult years for lads, a difficult turnaround in the summer.
