The Chicago White Sox reeled off their third straight loss last night, getting shut out 3-0 by the Kansas City Royals. Their struggles at the plate have been on full display, reflected in their atrocious 1-7 start. Despite some bumps in the road, Chicago’s pitching staff’s performance has been respectable.

Nevertheless, their offense needed some boost, and the Pale Hose hope the addition of outfielder Robbie Grossman can do just that while awaiting the returns of Eloy Jimenez and Luis Robert Jr. Grossman landed in Chicago on a minor-league deal after missing Spring Training.

To make room for him on the 40-man roster, the White Sox designated reliever Alex Speas for assignment. They selected Grossman’s contract to replace Jimenez on the active roster.

For Your Consideration

On Saturday, Chicago struck a deal to send Speas to the Oakland Athletics in exchange for cash considerations. In October of last year, the White Sox claimed Speas off waivers from the Texas Rangers. The hard-throwing righty pitched to a 4.50 ERA in six Cactus League innings.

Chicago assigned him to Triple-A Charlotte, where he allowed four runs in 2.1 innings.

The switch-hitting Grossman provides another platoon option for Pedro Grifol in right field. The 12-year veteran reaches base at a decent clip and should help an offense that’s only scored 13 runs in eight games. The abysmal offense needs all the help it can get while Luis Robert Jr. and Eloy Jimenez remain out of action while recovering from leg injuries.
