Carlisle United have lured the defender back to Brunton Park on a free transfer as they prepare for life back in League Two. He has penned a two-year deal with the Cumbrian outfit.

Hayden, 27, saw his contract at Wrexham expire at the end of last season after they were promoted from the fourth tier. He has since been weighing up his options and has decided to move back to his former team.

The Cumbrians’ boss Paul Simpson has said, as per the official club website: “We’re delighted that Aaron has agreed to return to us, he comes back to the club with more experience under his belt and two promotions. I think he’ll be a great addition to the group.

“As soon as we knew he was going to be available, he was a player we targeted early. We’re delighted to have been able to get this agreed ahead of other clubs.”
