SEATTLE – The Mariners were rolling to their most complete victory of the season.
Up six runs on the defending World Series champions and the team they are trying distance themselves from in the American League West standings, a packed T-Mobile Park danced and celebrated what appeared to be a decisive win over the Texas Rangers.
Instead, the Mariners, who seem to be allergic to easy wins, made the last three outs more difficult than needed.
Reliever Eduard Bazardo was brought in to mop up the final inning with plenty of cushion but he couldn’t throw strikes or get outs.
He allowed two runs and exited the game with two outs and the bases loaded.
The Mariners were forced to go Ryne Stanek to clean up the mess but he couldn’t do so without allowing more damage as Marcus Semien singled to right to score a pair of runs.
But Tyler Locklear’s diving stop on Corey Seager’s hard grounder ended the drama and the rally, giving the Mariners a 7-5 victory.
