Manchester City are fairly familiar when it comes to moving players in and out of the club.

Over previous summer transfer windows, a wide range of players have joined and left the Manchester club.

In terms of departures, City have seen numerous names leave the Etihad Stadium either on permanent transfer deals for significant fees or as free agents, whereas others have left on temporary loan deals.

With the latest summer transfer window open, some behind-the-scenes details have emerged regarding one of City’s current players and how he is viewed by a club that have him on their radar.

Daniele De Rossi has one main doubt about signing Kalvin Phillips for Roma

A recent report from Tutto Mercato Web, Kalvin Phillips is of interest to Roma in terms of a potential transfer move this summer, although Daniele De Rossi has some doubts about the Englishman’s athleticism.

After making 234 senior appearances for his boyhood club, Leeds United, Phillips joined City in a deal worth £45m during the 2022 summer transfer window.

18 months later, after starting just six of the 31 games he appeared in for Pep Guardiola’s side across all competitions, the Englishman joined West Ham United in the previous January transfer window on loan until the end of the season.

This loan spell ended up not being particularly successful for Phillips as he only started three of the eight Premier League games he appeared in.

In fact, Hammer striker Michail Antonio claimed that the midfielder had lost his confidence which led to him failing to have a positive period at the East London club.

De Rossi is right to have doubts about Phillips

Taking all of that into account, we feel unsurprised that De Rossi has some doubts about what Phillips would be able to offer his Roma side.

If these doubts about the Englishman’s athleticism were to put the Italian side off from launching a summer transfer move for him, we feel that City will have to find a different option for Phillips if they think he’d be better off elsewhere.
