Newcastle United were reportedly considering selling Anthony Gordon to comply with FFP/PSR restrictions last month

Former Newcastle United midfielder Dietmar Hamann has urged Liverpool to sign Anthony Gordon this summer.

There was confusion at the back end of last month when conflicting reports emerged about Gordon’s future. With FFP/PSR restrictions rearing its ugly head, there were suggestions the Magpies could reluctantly cash in on the 23-year-old.

That would have been a huge blow to Newcastle given Gordon’s heroics last season. An impressive 21 goal contributions across all competitions earned him a Euro 2024 call-up but Gareth Southgate used him for just four minutes on England’s way to the final.

Toon CEO Darren Eales vowed Gordon, Bruno Guimaraes and Alexander Isak would be Newcastle players next season during a midweek interview. But ex-German international Hamann – who played for the Magpies and Liverpool – took little notice.

“He did so at Everton even when they were struggling and after a tough start at Newcastle he has battled through and he’s one of their best players now,” he told Top Offshore Casinos. “I read somewhere that Liverpool is his boyhood club and I think it would be a brilliant signing, it also looks like Newcastle might need to sell some players this summer too.

“So Gordon would be great. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia has been mentioned from Napoli who said he wants to leave the club. But then obviously it depends on what Salah does. It’s been said for the last few years that it’s his last season and that he’s going to go in the summer.

“So obviously we need to find out and see what’s happening but I think Gordon would be a brilliant signing because obviously going forward. If you’ve got pace, it just changes games.”
