Matty Young made his Salford City debut yesterday after leaving Sunderland on loan.
The goalkeeper was named Darlington’s Young Player of the Season last term, having racked up five clean sheets in 14 starts to help avoid relegation.
Young, who is very highly-rated at Sunderland, then went onto join Salford City in League Two this summer.
The 17-year-old was benched for their opening day defeat to Port Vale at the weekend, but was handed his first start in their Carabao Cup clash with Doncaster Rovers last night.
Young earns big achievement in Salford City debut
Young conceded twice in a 2-0 defeat to last season’s play-off semi-finalists, but did manage to earn one achievement that hasn’t been done in four years in the competition.
As per Transfermarkt, the teenager became the fourth youngest goalkeeper to feature in the Carabao Cup at 17 years, eight months and 20 days old.
Young sits behind Martin Townsend, Steve Francis and Teddy Sharman-Lowe, while he is two months older than John Ruddy was when he featured for Cambridge United in 2004.
The Sunderland academy graduate is the youngest in four years, with Sharman-Lowe claiming third spot for Burton Albion in September 2020.
The 17-year-old is set for big things at Sunderland
Young is looking to follow in the footsteps of some highly successful goalkeepers on Wearside, with Anthony Patterson having nailed down the number one position – joining the club as a child.
Jordan Pickford made his first loan exit from Sunderland at 18 years old and went onto become their first choice, before joining Everton in 2017.
Young has forced his way into senior football at a much younger age, but will need to pick up regular game-time at Salford if he is to develop further.
